Red Cross Youth Challenge 2011 – Camp Unity

In line with MOE’s vision to provide a challenging environment for our youth leaders of tomorrow, we are pleased to invite your school unit to nominate 4-6 cadets to participate in the upcoming Red Cross Youth (RCY) Challenge 2011. RCY Challenge 2011 aims to create a platform for experiential learning and leadership development, and to allow participants to challenge themselves beyond their limits!

This year, the RCY Challenge will allow participants to challenge their personal limits and opportunities for new friendships and discoveries from the range of activities offered. Besides having activities to Pulau Ubin and water activities at Kallang, we would also be having a night heritage trail will be conducted for the first-time and inter-division games will allow respective divisions to plot their wits against each other. Most importantly, retaining the motto “U n I, the Youth of Red Cross”, this camp hope to inculcate values such as team work, resilience and communication among our youth.

The event consists of 1 Contact Session, and a 4 Days 3 Nights overnight camp.

Community Outreach Project 2011

Community Outreach Project 2011 is in conjunction with Red Cross Youth (RCY) Challenge 2011 and aims to create an avenue for our youths to experience giving back to the community and caring for the less fortunate. This year, the project will be held during the 3rd day of RCY Challenge on 17 December 2011 and cadets participating in the camp will be involved in the project.
Community Outreach Project 2011 consists of distributing “The RED Pack” packages which will be made up of a variety of stationeries that will help them prepare for the new school year ahead. The beneficiaries, children from the range of Kindergarten to Primary 3, will them be receiving these packages in a fun filled carnival organized for them and their families. This year, we are have set our targeted number of beneficiaries at approximately 500 to 1000 children.
Thus, we seek your cooperation and support in aiding us to make this project a success; Red Cross Youth Unit schools around Singapore are strongly encouraged to make donations-in-kind as part of contributions towards the package and prizes distributed during the carnival.
The details and specifications of preferred donations-in-kind are as below:

Red Cross Youth Flag Day 2011 on 7 September 2011 (Wed)

Assembling area: Dover MRT station in front of control station (we will walk to the Sports Hall together). If you know how to go there, you may go there yourself. But please inform your teachers if you do so.

You will be grouped in such a way that you will have at least a Sec 2 or Sec 3 with you. Congratulations to Footdrill Comp!

Well done Footdrill Competition Squad! You have done our school and unit proud by being champion in the national Footdrill Competition! The team first competed with 32 other schools for top 12 position by performing static drills. They needed to finish a list of 15 commands and the squad must move from a start point to an end point. They got into top 12 although they did not get top 3 for the South Zone. For the Fancy drill, they marched to the music Silly Boy by Eva Simons, with perfect precision most of the time. Great job!

Introduction : To be awarded to Cadets who have already been awarded a Red Cross Knowledge

Silver) Incentive Badge and have passed a Presentation Test conducted by HQ.

Criterion : Schools are to send in not more than 2 teams. (3-4 cadets per team)
Max capacity of 15 teams based on First-Come-First-Serve basis.

Teams are to Choose from Either ONE Topic:

1) Red Cross through time: From Jean Henri Dunant till the present.

2) Which is more important, the IFRC or the ICRC?

3) How is the local SRCS – including RCY, assisting the Worldwide Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement?

Format of Accreditation:

Teams are judged based on a 10 minutes PowerPoint presentation. There will be a Questions and Answers session after each Team’s Presentation.

Teams will be assessed on the following:

(a) Presentation Skills (30%)

(b) Presentation Content (70%)

Assessment Criteria (Teams / Individuals are to achieve at lest 75% to be considered pass)

To CAC (Humanitarian Outreach), you have also done us proud by getting into top 5 out of 16 schools! Learn from our mistakes and we can do better next time!

To CAC (Current Affairs Shield), you have spent so much time doing the booklet. Although your hard work has not paid off, we will learn from our mistakes and do better next time.

Experience learning in every competition you participate in. All of you have become wiser when going through this competition in terms of performing and managing time and relationships. Although there may be differences and arguments in the teams, do not get disappointed with each other and stop being friends, as arguments can be a start to a better relationship, as you work out your differences or learn about each others' differences.

Singapore Red Cross' Photography Competition-Volunteering in Action

Inline with the tagline of this year’s World Red Cross Day to promote the spirit of volunteerism, “Find the Volunteer inside you”, Singapore Red Cross will be organizing a Photography Competition for its members. The main objective of the competition is to capture our members and/or members of the public conducting acts of volunteerism which bring cheers to others.

Requirements
i) Shots can be taken using mobile phone cameras or standard digital cameras
ii) File format - in Jpeg Format
iii) File Size - Approximately 1MB

This Competition is opened to all RCY members. All entries will be judged by a panel of official from Singapore Red Cross. Lucky members will also stand to win monthly prizes sponsored by a kind donor. Background of Exploring Humanitarian Law
Exploring Humanitarian Law (EHL) is an international education programme for young people between the ages of 13 and 18. It was designed by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in close association with Education Development Center, Inc. (EDC). EHL provides 36 hours of activities that introduce young people to the basic rules of international humanitarian law (IHL). The learning materials, which are based both on historical and contemporary situations, show how IHL aims to protect life and human dignity during armed conflict and reduce and prevent the suffering and destruction that result from war. The materials expose students to IHL by exploring ethical and humanitarian issues arising from armed conflict. EHL aims to foster in students an awareness of the necessity of humanitarian norms, an understanding of different perspectives, and an interest and responsible involvement in local and international events.

EHL is not explicitly concerned with peace, tolerance, mutual understanding and prevention of violence or conflict resolution. It emphasizes the positive changes in attitude that can evolve from the ideas of respect for life and human dignity, civic responsibility, and solidarity. Thus, EHL can be incorporated in a wide range of different subject areas that fall under the broad heading of citizenship education. The content of EHL is linked to academic subjects such as civics, social studies, philosophy, history, law, and literature. Its teaching methods reinforce many important academic and life skills such as communication, disagreeing respectfully, reasoning, research, problem-solving and critical thinking.

DETAILS OF THE STANDARD FIRST AID EXAMINATION (3 hours)

· Participants, who failed the theory exam at their 1^st attempt, are allowed a 2^nd attempt on the same day. If they fail the 2^nd attempt theory exam, they would need to re-take the exam (Theory & Practical) on another day.

· Participants who failed in any practical station will have to re-take the entire exam (Theory & Practical).

· The examination shall not be conducted in the event of attendance rate below 80% which is not cost viable.

· Theory test - 30 MCQs - 30 minutes

- Passing grade is 18 out of 30.

- It is compulsory to pass the Theory before cadets can proceed to the practical.

· Practical test - Two scenarios - 10 min each

· Unconscious casualty

Trainee is required to do a casualty survey and give appropriate emergency first aid inclusive CPR and the recovery position.

Trainee is required to perform the Heimlich manoeuvre, treat a bleeding wound and immobilise one fracture

Introduction : This workshop aims to standardise the First Aid Syllabus across all RCY Cadet Units via practical sessions of Bandaging and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
Criteria :
Schools are to send in not more than 2 Cadet. It will be based on First-Come-First-Serve basis. Cadets need not be SFA certified but Teachers are encouraged to send Cadets even if they are SFA certified.
Format : Cadets would be put through a series of different bandaging scenarios and also a hands-on practical session of CPR. Bandages are to be brought by Cadets themselves.

Exam Assessment –30 MCQs (18 to pass) & Practical.

Theory test - 30 MCQs - 30 minutes
- Passing grade is 18 out of 30.
- It is compulsory to pass the Theory before cadets can proceed to the practical.

Practical test - Two scenario - 10 minutes each

Unconscious casualty
required to do a casualty survey and give appropriate emergency first aid - Heimlich manoeuvre, CPR or recovery position
Conscious casualty
Required to treat a bleeding wound and immobilise 1 fracture.

Dressing the wound:

Fracture or dislocation - possibilities to choose from:

Red Cross Youth Challenge 2010

In line with MOE’s vision to provide a challenging environment for our youth leaders of tomorrow, we are pleased to invite your school unit’s participation in Red Cross Youth (RCY) Challenge 2010. RCY Challenge 2010 aims to create a platform for experiential learning and leadership development, and to allow participants to challenge themselves beyond their limits!

This year, the RCY Challenge will be inviting delegates from various Asian countries to participate in this Challenge. These delegates will team up with your cadets and travel to several destinations in Singapore (such as Sentosa, Zoo, Pulau Ubin and the Central Business District) to take part in a series of exciting challenges and discoveries.

Challenges and discoveries range from outdoor survival skills to discovering the heritage of Singapore. The slogan of for this year's "TheRED Race" is "Ready, Excite, Discover!". Participants can look forward to a fun-filled 4 Days 3 Nights of new friendships, excitement and discovery.

This will be a rare opportunity for the campers to meet fellow Red Cross members from the Asian countries. During Cultural Night, they will be able to better appreciate and understand the cultural differences and the various National Red Cross Societies through exhibitions and performances. The camp will reach its climax during the Campfire, when all the campers will have a good time with songs, dance and cheers.

The RCY Challenge would also allow participants to fulfill the criteria for National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA) Bronze and National Heritage Badge while immersed in the 4 days of exciting and challenging activities such as:

- Heritage Trail

- Map Navigation

- Outdoor Cooking

- Tent Pitching
